Booming Independent Group Rx Care Pharmacy Carries a Foundation of Core Values to Each of its 32 Locations with the Help of IPC

Throughout the United States there are great stories of independent pharmacies thriving under the pressures of the current landscape. One of the great successes is Rx Care Pharmacy, a flourishing group of 32 and counting independent pharmacies located in Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and Louisiana. With the support of its buying group IPC, Rx Care Pharmacy President Alpesh Patel is dedicated at each of his stores to improving the health and well-being of his customers.

IPC:
How was your experience at McKesson ideaShare and networking at IPC’s Annual Business Meeting?
Alpesh:
“McKesson ideaShare was a great experience, and the food was great (especially at IPC’s reception). We’ve been attending the event for the last four years, and things have changed a lot. We’ve met lots of new people that I knew by name and had worked with, such as the IPC sales staff, but I hadn’t seen a lot of them in person. So that has been a nice experience, getting to know them more personally and to see how committed they are to helping us.”

IPC:
How important is attending events and networking for Rx Care Pharmacy?
Alpesh:
“The networking we do is very important for our stores. We really want to keep all of our stores up to date and informed on the latest that is going on (in the industry). Communication is a huge part of that for Rx Care Pharmacy, and we utilize a system to make sure each store gets all of the same information and make sure they understand our initiatives.”

IPC:
Could you take us through the history of Rx Care Pharmacy and how it has grown dramatically since its inception in 2007?
Alpesh:
“I am a licensed pharmacist in Michigan and started my first store with my partner (and 50/50 co-owner Manish Patel) in 2007 in Flint, Michigan. Now from that first store, we are up to 32 stores with lots of expansion over the past five years. We have a corporate office in Tampa, Florida and also one in Michigan, where we handle all of our purchasing, orders and that sort of thing. My partner and I no longer work directly in the stores ourselves and we’ve haven’t for the last four years. Rx Care Pharmacy stores are found throughout Florida and southern Michigan; as well as locations in Virginia; Louisiana; and, four stores in North Carolina.”

IPC:
How is Rx Care Pharmacy able to manage all of its locations, yet keep each store as a proud independent entity on its own?
Alpesh:
“At our corporate office in Tampa, we currently have 12 office employees responsible for everything. We have a purchasing officer who buys all of the supplies for the pharmacies. We have another employee responsible for all of the contracting and insurances for the pharmacies. We have an accoun¬tant. Here we house all aspects of the pharmacy that need be to taken care of outside of the pharmacy.
Communication between the corporate office and the stores is really important. We are in constant communication with all of the stores, and have an operations manager that is out in the field all of the time, reaching out to any of our stores that might need help, support, or extra attention from us. Otherwise, I try to find time to visit all of the stores and keep in constant contact with them.”

IPC:
What are some of the services available at Rx Care Pharmacy?
Alpesh:
“We offer numerous products and services designed to fit the needs of our patients. We offer free online transfer and refill of prescriptions. Rx Care Pharmacy specializes in specialty and compounding medications. We offer free, confidential, same-day shipment of medication to a customer’s home or designated location. We have a patient care team to assist our patients with administering their medication. We have reimbursement specialists available to help with any reimbursement needs or issues. We also offer custom compounding for dose-specific medications. Recently, we began a specialty pharmacy at a location in Michigan. That is something that is coming along, but is still a process right now.”

IPC:
What is the main focus of all Rx Care Pharmacy?
Alpesh:
“Our main focus is always customer service at all of our stores, and (our business model) is very customer service driven. We stress that over and over, but also try to go above and beyond and try to do everything possible to assist our customers and our patients.”
